Here Comes Winter – What Does it Mean for Your Roof?

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this winter in the Triad is going to be “wet and white.” Although your kids may be dreaming of those snow days, if your roof isn’t in good shape, you could have some problems. Taking steps now by contacting a local roofing company for an inspection and roof repair can prevent a little issue from becoming a big problem.

Little Problems Grow

Cracks in shingles grow during the freeze-thaw cycle. Because water expands when it freezes, those small cracks become bigger. Cracked shingles can’t protect your home especially when snow fall eventually melts or spring rains come. Having your local roofing company replace damaged shingles now will prevent roof leaks.

Gutters that are even a little clogged can fill with snow and eventually ice. If you see icicles hanging over your gutters, you likely have an ice dam. This is formed when the water in your gutter can’t flow out, freezes and as the snow on your roof melts, the only place for the water to go is over the edge of your gutter. As it does, it will eventually freeze, causing beautiful, yet hazardous, icicles. Because of the added weight, gutters can pull away from the home causing further damage.

How is your home’s insulation and ventilation? When cool weather sets in we close up our homes. The moisture, especially from the bathrooms, heads into your attic. This can cause issues with your roof, ranging from dry rot to increasing the likelihood of ice dams forming. Of course, a home lacking in proper insulation will also have higher heating and cooling bills year round. Replacing or adding insulation benefits you not only in preventing some roofing issues but also will lower your heating and cooling costs.

Perform Roof Repair Now

Most roofing problems are preventable. If you haven’t had a roofing inspection in the past year, now is the time to call your local roofing company for an inspection. Your roofer will evaluate the entire roofing system and advise as to any repairs that need to be performed. If you’re in the Triad and don’t have a local roofing company you can trust, call Cooley Roofing and Construction. We’ve been helping families prepare their home for winter for more than 20 years.
