Although you may not need a roofing inspection or roof repair, you still have some work to do before winter sets in. Even though we’re headed into our drier season, that doesn’t mean you don’t want to head up onto your roof and take care of your roof maintenance before the temperatures dip below freezing. Here are a few things you should do to help ensure your commercial roofing protects your building this winter.
Clean it Off
Once all the leaves have fallen, you should head onto your roof to make sure that you don’t have piles of leaves rotting on your roof. Also look for bird nests and other debris from animals. When the leaves break down on the roof or freeze to the roof, they can cause damage. Taking a bit of time to remove anything that shouldn’t be there is key to keeping your roof healthy.
Check for Standing Water
Standing water can be especially damaging to your flat roof if we have several rounds of freeze-thaw cycles with moisture. Even a small puddle that freezes and thaws can lead to damage. Plus, ponding on your roof generally means there is an issue with your roof’s drainage. If you have ponding or standing water that can’t easily be explained, you should contact your commercial roofing company. They can find the cause and make necessary repairs.
It’s never a good idea to have lots of roof traffic, however, it is a good idea to visually inspect your roofing before the temperatures fall. You should look for cracks in seals around roof protrusions and equipment on the roof. The most common cause of a roof leak is poorly sealed areas. If you find any, you’ll want to have them re-sealed immediately. Many commercial roofing sealing products can’t cure in temperatures below about 40 degrees.
